Mercenaries, Spies and Private Eyes (MSPE) was first published in 1983.
This is a rpg very similar to the classic Tunnels & Trolls fantasy rpg system, except it is (as the title suggests) for more modern characters with guns, armor and tech.
You can play adventures from the Victorian age all the way to the modern era.
It is more of a skill based system than T&T. And the skills are based on modern abilities like computer hacking, gunsmithing, driving etc.
This is contemporary role playing at its best. The name says it all: the adventurers are flinty mercenaries, suave spies, gumshoe detectives, and more.
The system is easy to handle and complete, with nearly 100 skills for character development, an extensive weapons list, and a detailed section about how to run mystery & crime scenarios.
